Rockingham Board of Supervisor's meeting - presentation of the DR100 proceeds

This Wednesday, March 23rd, at the 6PM Rockingham Board of Supervisors regularly scheduled meeting, Steve Tomasi and others are scheduled to present the check from the DR100 proceeds to Rockingham County and VDOT to add bike lanes along Stone Spring in front of the new hospital.

The presentation will take place after the VDOT report at the beginning of the meeting - see agenda here (pdf).

This is a GREAT opportunity for the SVBC to show up to support the work of the DR100, thank VDOT, introduce ourselves to our Board of Supervisors (possibly before the meeting or after if you want to stay for the entire meeting), and more. If you can make it, please show up to show your support for cycling!

The meeting is at the North end of town at regular location in the Rockingham County Administration Building.

TAKE ACTION! Help maintain access for bicycles on West Virginia's North Fork Trail. A Wilderness proposal would close the trail to bikes. IMBA has crafted a plan to preserve bike access and is proposing two alternatives for this Wilderness designation. These include either strengthening the existing National Recreation designation or adjusting the wilderness boundary to exclude the ridgetrail. Please take the time to send a quick email to your congressional representative. IMBA designated the Spruce Knob/North Fork area an IMBA Epic in 2009 because the riding there is sooo good.

Read and respond to IMBA's plan NOW!

Protect vital bicycle funding programs- demand proportionality in rescissions! Take Action!

The Jobs Bill passed by Congress last week contains a $2.2 billion rescission of transportation funds from state Departments of Transportation. In many states, the DOT will likely target bike funding programs for the money to send back to the federal government – unless local advocates speak up and make sure that doesn’t happen. States must report which program funds are affected by August 25th- so action is needed this week! Unlike previous rescissions there is no proportionality requirement calling for equal distribution of funding program cuts. Instead, the law gives the States maximum flexibility to choose the unobligated balances of funds to be rescinded. The amount each state has to rescind is up to $200 million for the largest states. Many programs that fund bicycle projects are threatened by these rescissions including. These programs are often unfairly targets for cuts or rescissions, and in some cases have been completely gutted. Take action now! Please contact your Governor and ask that rescissions be done equitably across programs, and that those that traditionally fund bicycling projects not be unfairly targeted.

Your feedback wanted on Virginia's Bicycle Policy Plan

Good Morning,

As you know, we have been waiting for approval to put the draft State Bicycle Policy Plan out for public comment. We have now received that approval and our web team has created a page for the draft plan. Please use this opportunity to review and make final comments on the plan. Additionally, please feel free to forward this link to any other interested parties for their review and comment, as we want to get as much feedback as possible. The public comment period is open now and will end on Friday, September 17th. The comments will be submitted directly to me, but via the Bike/Ped email account.

Every 15 years or so the National Forest creates a new plan under which a specific Forest will be managed. The plan greatly influences how district rangers and Forest Service Employees manage their individual forests and make day to day decisions.
