SVBC Goals

SVBC is dedicated to the implementation of the Harrisonburg Bicycle Plan and the development of a specific Rockingham County Bicycle Plan. Currently SVBC is working hard (and needs your support) on the following specific projects.

City of Harrisonburg Bicycle Plan

The City of Harrisonburg has had a bicycle plan since 1994 but the implementation of this plan has not been easy or fast. With more citizen involvement SVBC hopes to make the new 2010 City Bicycle Plan a reality.

Rockingham County Bicycle Plan.

Currently Rockingham County or the HRMPO (Harrisonburg Rockingham Metropolitan Planning Organization) do not have a specific bike plan. The County is part of the CSPDC (Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission) which has a regional bike plan. See the CSPDC website for information on the work of this organization which includes www.bikethevalley.org. The county is also a member of the HRMPO (Harrisonburg Rockingham Metropolitan Planning Organization). The FY11 Unified Planning Work Program adopted May 2010 by the HRMPO includes a new study, the beginning of an HRMPO wide bike plan. See the HRMPO website for information on the work of this organization. The SVBC believes there is a need for a comprehensive and coordinated bike planning and implementation in the HRMPO and Rockingham County areas. SVBC Advocacy Success

SVBC has had many great successes, especially in the past five years. We will only find greater success if we all work together, under one cycling advocacy organization, to help make our goals a reality.

Main St. Bike Lanes
The first phase of the Main Street bike lanes were painted in August 2010. This was also the first project completed as part of the new 2010 Harrisonburg Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. This first phase of the Main Street bike lanes go from Miller Circle to Cantrell Avenue. In the near future SVBC hopes to work with the City to extend the Main Street bike lanes both North and South.
Chicago Ave Path
This is the first piece of the EMU to Downtown connector. The path help folks navigate from Graystone Drive to Dogwood Drive without having to travel on Chicago Ave. This path was finished in the spring of 2007
Port Republic bicycle lanes
Being part of the planning process for the Port Republic Road expansion was vital to making sure VDOT and the City of Harrisonburg included bike lanes to the City’s eastern limit. The bike lane and path should be finished by spring of 2010.
Arboretum multi user path
Working with JMU, City of Harrisonburg and Stone Gate Apartments, SVBC pushed and help get this ½ path open to bikes. This path is a vital connector for JMU students and local citizens connecting the Neff Ave bike to University Boulevard. After years of waiting the path was finished to Neff Ave in summer of 2008.
Design, Implementation and Construction of the Rocktown Trails
One of SVBC most successful stories was the development as well as continued maintenance and construction of the “Rocktown Trails” as Hillandale Park. This 3.5 mile (and growing) multi user off road trail system is a hit for all levels of mountain bikers, trail runners and hikers. Visit the City Park (make link) website and SVBC Trails Page (make link) for more information.
Westover Path
SVBC believes every neighborhood should be safely connected to a local park, the Westover Path provides this safe connection. At the end of Elmwood Drive this path connects the Dogwood neighborhood to Westover path with out having to get on Dogwood Drive.
Safer Railroad Track Crossing on South Main Street and Country Club Road:
SVBC worked with the Norfolk Southern RR Company and City of Harrisonburg to create a safer crossing to the two most dangerous RR tracks crossings in the City of Harrisonburg. The project was completed in the fall of 2009.

SVBC Current Projects

SVBC is currently working on the following projects. We need your support and fellow citizens to help push they project forward. Are you willing to help?

One Mile Challenge Campaign

Fixing City of Harrisonburg Drainage Grates
Currently SVBC is working with the City Council and Staff to fix/replace the existing drainage grates that are a hazard to cyclist. If you know of one please let us know!!
