Events and Activities

Don't forget about our weekly events.

The Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition sponsors many annual events for the cycling community. These are fun, family-friendly events with activities for cyclists of all ages. Listed below are just some of the many events that the SVBC participates in throughout the year.

Super Bowl Ride
This is a chilly, sometimes just downright cold, annual group ride that takes place every year on the day of "The Big Game", also known as the "Super Bowl". Before settling down to watch two teams battle over the pigskin, join your fellow cyclists for a winter climb to the top of Flagpole knob, and then decend back down on one of many exciting trails or roads.
Harris-Roubaix - Sunday April 15, 2012
The annual Harris-Roubaix is a casual group ride from Harrisonburg to a family farm about 7 miles North of Harrisonburg, from the farm there will be a 10-15 mile loop marked for your enjoyment. You are more then welcome to ride the loop once or more, there is a informal 3 lap race that will crown the Champion of the Harris-Roubaix. This event is held on the same day as the Paris Roubaix which is sometime in April. more info
Massanutten Super D and Short Track - Saturday, June 9, 2012
A unique event that is a mix of cross country and downhill racing. The Massanutten course includes a little bit of everything: tight, twisty, rocky technical ridge riding and finishes with high speed smooth trail that include rollers, rythem sections, berms, and some pedaling. You end up 1500 feet lower when you are finished with an expected winning time of 9 minutes.

Ice Cream Ride - August 20th 9:00am
Come on out for the annual Ice Cream Ride! A casual road ride with the stated intent of crossing paths with an ice-cream or frozen treat establishment at some point during the ride. You'll have to show up to find out where. Meet at the Food Lion on Route 42 N (near EMU). Ride distance: 25-30 miles moderate pace with a stop for ice cream near the finish of the ride. Contact: Marcia (540) 432-3312.
Sixpack Downhill Group Rides - EVERY Friday starting 8/26
A Harrisonburg tradition for over a decade. The Six Pak Downhills are a very fun and VERY informal group ride in the mountains West of Harrisonburg. Each week is a new trail somewhere in the George Washington National Forest. Location is announced that Friday on the SVBC website. Carpool and group meet up is always at the Food Lion on South 42. The group leaves the parking lot in cars at 3:00pm each Friday of the fall. The Ride consists of a casual leisurely pace to climb up the mountain and then a very informal "race" back down the mountain. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to participate especially if you have never ridden in the mountains around town.

Last year, in our inaugural year, we raised $23,950, after all expenses, which was used to expand bike/pedestrian lanes as well as give away reflective apparel to all participants to promote safety! For the Event, you can choose to participate in a 5k Run/Walk or 10k Run, both of which are chip timed, USATF certified and will have incredible awards for top categories! Or you can choose to participate in a 50k or 100k Cycle ride that traverses through incredible breathtaking mountain views and pastoral scenes (see www.DR100.org for cycling video clip). There will be a DJ & live band entertainment, free lunch, snacks, sports drinks and rest stops provided!
