14th Annual Tour de Burg
June 30th - July 5th, 2009 - Harrisonburg, VA
It's “cheaper than living", better than ever, and maybe even a year for a mortal atop the podium. You could not eat well and ride big for this cheap if you stayed home! Check the dates because the parcours are final for another installment of the grandest of Grand Tours, the 2009 Tour de Burg. This edition brings back some classic routes of Tour History along with the new twists and secret single that keeps you coming back for more. Plenty of singletrack, deep gravel, and cheap good times are promised - guaranteed!
The tifosi is still a buzz from the Tour Committee's controversial preseason decision not to invite the Continental Professional teams. This leaves most of the prestigious past champions and top rivals out of contention and out of the picture. "We have questioned the integrity and dedication to the sport held by these teams for some time" stated a Tour Committee spokesman. "Their consistent absences from the mandatory doping tests and suspiciously dominating performances have gone on long enough". Obviously a higher level of riding will be acheived with the lack of these teams and the open doors for new and aspiring slummers.
The Committee has presented the (B)(R)yan Fawley Challenge and drawn the proper legal papers required to put an end to this cycling mockery following Sunday's classic finish in Hone Quarry. The overall winner in the individual matchup between Bryan and Ryan Fawley will take home more than just a higher place on the general classification. The Fawley with the better finishing time will have the luxury of retaining his natural born name and forever removing the menace of a like named rival. Tour lawyers have submitted the proper paper work for the legal name change of the loser. Bryan's would face a name change to Jay V. Squad and Ryan would assume the formal moniker of Texas Ranger. Other challenges are being presented to the Committee, particularly from Team Cupcake as intersquad rivalries have riddled the group.
Well who are these mortal contenders? With a Giro win under his belt and a strong spring campaign, Richmond native Jimmy McMillan and his shady domestique will be marked men. Leading the chase will be DirtyD Prillaman and his Boone henchman. Prillaman took home two 2008 Grand Tour wins and was first loser in the 08 TDB – the closest ever to a clean sweep of the 3 Grand Tours. "We can't let Reuben win" is the new slogan of the JV Squad who will present Kyle Lawrence and Ryan Fawley (2008 KOM) as their 1-2 punch plus the unveiling of Collin Collindish, their new sprinting sensation. The JV's are wary to watch Reuben Kline as he leads a strong Cupcake team stocked with the bionic Buck and Keefer but lacking their powerful singled domestique. The Burg promises to represent with the duo-40's Chris Scott and Thomas Jenkins facing perhaps their final chance to climb atop the podium. The old men better ride well as Team Green leader Miguel Carpong is rumored out of this year's edition with a mysterious tainting injury and there is little hope for the raw talent of Chaz Michaels. Since it is a year for the mortals we simply cannot mention all the possible contenders who may find their way to glory in Hone Quarry but watch out for Sprint King Pistol Pete from Philly with his young urban cowboys and Fooftown?...I mean Marty?
